Walter Crane was one of the great illustrators of the British Arts and Crafts movement and a committed socialist whose images appeared on May Day posters, trade union banners and socialist publications across the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His art made solidarity beautiful — and made the argument visually, at a time when that mattered enormously.
